An excerpt from Pastor Parsons' article Justified by Faith

Justified by Faith

28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. (Romans 3:28)

At the end of this month, we’re going to celebrate a great and blessed milestone for the Christian Church. Five hundred and four years ago, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, which we celebrate as the official start of the Lutheran Reformation. His theses focused on correcting a major issue within the church. The church was teaching that you could literally buy your way into heaven by purchasing indulgences.

Even before that time, the thought of earning your way into heaven has been an issue for the Church nearly from the beginning. If we just do what

makes God happy, if we follow his laws, if we purchase indulgences, then we can cover our sins and earn a place in God’s favor. Martin Luther spoke so much against that kind of teaching because it didn’t bring salvation. Instead, it took the focus off of the one who could save, who did save.

It eliminates God’s grace from the equation, and it cannot bring life. Justification, salvation from sins, death, and the devil, can only come through faith. It is then that our focus, our praise, our worship, are all on the source of our salvation, on Jesus Christ.

We cannot be perfect. We cannot fulfill the law. But Jesus was completely obedient to ever facet of God’s law. His perfect life led to his death on the cross so that our sins could no longer condemn. But his perfection, his righteousness, only becomes our in one way, through faith. Praise God that he has called us to faith through his Word, the only true Scriptures, that we might know salvation.

Praise God that he works through such men as Martin Luther to return his people to his own Word, rather than the false teachings of men. May he hold us ever-faithful and bring us into eternal life, holding us firm in saving, justifying faith. Amen

                                                                                                In Christian love,

                                                                                           Pastor Wolf B. Parsons
