Except from Pastor Parsons article: Children of God

We’re now in the midst of our “Welcome Home” series, and as it started, we focused especially on welcoming all members home into our congregation here at Divine Savior. Why such a focus on bringing people back into our doors? It’s not so much about getting everyone back together in this building. It’s about the blessings we receive together as a body of believers, especially the Christian support we can provide for one another through the Word.

The idea definitely isn’t to fill the pews. The idea is to bring people back to God through hearing faithful preaching of his Word and using that very Word to guide each other in every aspect of our lives. It’s not about our building and the how many people we can get inside it. It’s not about the visible church.

Our focus really is on bringing people into the invisible Church, into the family of God. This can only be done when we hear the Word and God works through it to create faith in our hearts, faith in Christ Jesus as our Savior who died on the cross so that we might be free from the condemnation of our sins and who rose again so that we might live.

The apostle Paul wrote, “ 26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:26-29)

It’s a fantastic blessing when we can all come together in the visible church, worshiping and praising our God and Lord. Praise and thanks to him, also, that we don’t just come out of an obligation or out of false faith, but that he moves us to trust and know that we are clothed with Christ. It doesn’t matter who we are. It doesn’t matter where we came from. Believers are all one in Christ Jesus, and we are heirs according to the promise.

This is the promise of eternal life and salvation through Christ. And eternal life in heaven is the true home to which we have been called; it is the true home to which we hope and pray that all people will come by coming to know Christ through the Word. May God continue to guide us through his Word, bringing us into his visible church so that we might strengthen one another and grow together in faith because he has brought us into his invisible Church, adopted heirs into the family of God.

In Christian love,

Pastor Wolf B. Parsons
