Except from Pastor Parsons article: For Israel – For Me!

“When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue, Judah became God’s sanctuary, Israel his dominion. The sea looked and fled, the Jordan turned back; the mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. Why was it, O sea, that you fled, O Jordan, that turned back, you mountains, that you skipped like rams, you hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water.”

These words from Psalm 114 give a very brief summary of Israel’s flight from Egypt and the forty years they spent in the desert. But it goes far beyond that. This summary includes many of the great and powerful things God did for his people: parting the Red Sea, bringing water from the stone, stopping up the Jordan River – all these things he did to protect and provide for Israel. Even in the times when Israel turned away, calling out against God, bowing down to the golden calf, blaming Moses and God for their less-than-ideal circumstances, God did not forsake his people, but rescued them and stayed with them.

The LORD did this because he had promised a Savior who would come from this chosen people – “Judah became God’s sanctuary.” God preserved this specific group of people so that he had made a promise for all people. Everything he did for Israel, all the great wonders he displayed in fulfilling his promises to them, he did so that he might bring about our salvation through Jesus. We can see his power and strength in these actions, but the greatest show of his power is in the grace and forgiveness he has offered for all. In saving his people then, God fulfilled his promises of sending the Messiah, of sending his Son to save all. Praise God for bringing us to know and trust that this promise is for us.

In Christ,

Pastor Wolf B. Parsons
